In Traditional Chinese Medicine, sciatica is most commonly classified as a Bi (obstruction) syndrome affecting the Bladder and Gallbladder meridians that run through the lower back, hip, and leg. Cold, damp, and wind pathogens invade these meridians, causing the characteristic burning, shooting, or aching pain that worsens with cold or prolonged sitting.
Acupuncture points along the lumbar spine, sacrum, Gallbladder 30 (huantiao), and the posterior leg are selected to open obstruction, release piriformis tension, and reduce pressure on the sciatic nerve root. For disc-related sciatica (L4-L5, L5-S1 compression), treatment focuses on reducing local inflammation and muscle guarding around the compressed segment.
Can acupuncture help sciatica? Clinical research suggests acupuncture may reduce sciatic pain and improve function. It is commonly used alongside physical therapy and may help reduce reliance on pain medications.
How many sessions does sciatica require? Acute flare-ups may resolve in 4–8 sessions. Long-standing or disc-related sciatica typically requires a longer course. Dr. Cai will assess your case at the first visit and provide a realistic timeline.
